Creating Access to Distance Learning Experiences for ALL
Last Spring, as we shifted to distance learning, our team went “all in” to ensure students of every ability were learning and thriving. In serving our students with disabilities, we experimented with different combinations of supports, tools, worksheets, and discussion guides. We met weekly to discuss the benefits of each and identify strategies that would also work in a traditional classroom environment.
As we returned to distance learning after the winter break, we put into practice all we had learned during the first semester and followed six families with students with disabilities in a renewed journey of support. The result is a series of videos of amazing TK-12 students, parents, special education teachers, and general education teachers working together to excel. The series walks educators and parents through critical components of effective distance learning programs that can also be applied to in-person learning. Each of the four videos includes practical strategies that educators can apply right away. We hope these insights help teachers, families, and others support students with disabilities, whether that’s during distance learning or in a traditional learning setting.
